Matt Robinson

My career covers many years, perhaps too many years😉, in wealth management and personal banking through roles in London, New York and Zurich. During this time I worked on most of the core financial products like investments, pensions, banking and credit. As I progressed, I was frequently asked by friends and colleagues about their financial challenges and enjoyed helping them understand how they can move ahead.

Over the last five years or so, I have developed a deep understanding of sustainable finance. This started with courses, research, building a network and greening my own finances. I then moved onto educating others through events and by co-founding a voluntary organisation to help people save and invest in a sustainable way, starting with their pension. I have also mentored several green fintech startups. But it was during personal conversations with people about greening their finances that I noticed that most people first need to build their awareness of how finance works and their confidence in making financial decisions.

This realisation led me to recognise that a very practical way for me to help people was to become a financial coach. I trained and certified with the Wise Monkey Practitioner programme in 2022. Wise Monkey was the pioneer in the UK and is widely regarded as leading the professional development of the financial coaching sector. Since completing it, I have started to get a real buzz out of helping people improve their relationship with money, hearing how the fog surrounding financial matters has lifted, hearing how they no longer feel stuck, seeing them progress with the actions they have defined with my help as the path ahead.

In addition to my work as a finance coach, I am working on a ClimateTech startup and I consult to other financial firms on sustainable finance and fintech. I currently live in the Surrey Hills with my wife and 13 year old son. I like to think he shares my empathy while I can share his abundant energy!

Why True Worth?

Through these frequent discussions with people about their finances, I have come to appreciate that most of us are not comfortable with money, feel a sense of unease in talking about, or dealing with, money. We have a lingering sense that our finances hold us back, not help move us forward. We often feel that our financial lives and our real lives are disconnected, out of harmony.

Furthermore, many of us feel that we are working towards a set of goals that don’t align with what is important to our own lives. In particular it can be easy to fall into the trap of seeing the accumulation of money, assets and belongings as the critical measures of personal success. Yes, these are all to some measure important but only to the degree they serve the life we want to live, the life that brings contentment, wellbeing and a sense that we are being true to ourselves.

Through True Worth I help people to build their confidence with money and develop an understanding of how their financial arrangements can support their wellbeing. I then help them to identify and build the connections between their finances and living a life with purpose and fulfilment.

A final important point: I am not authorised to provide financial advice and I take great care not to do so. This means for example I do not help you to select particular providers or financial products. I can support you with the knowledge, confidence and methods to make your own decisions. If you would like to use an independent financial adviser (IFA) to help you select and arrange financial products, I can help you to develop a process to select one that matches your requirements and expectations.
